In this year, I decided to use basically the same receiver as in last years contest. Anyway, there were some noteworthy improvements compared to the receiver last year. First, I added a second transformer (Bogen T-725) to allow for a better matching to a broad range of headphone impedances. Second, I enhanced the radio by another band tuning from about 130 kHz to 300 kHz and thus covering the longwave band from 148.5 kHz to 283.5 kHz in Europe. As third, I modified some of the coil windings and switched to 460x0.02mm litz wire in case of the upper frequency mediumwave subband. The largest gain in sensitivity I got was done by using a pair of true soundpowered headphones with USIC UA 1611 elements. For a more detailed description go to Visitors Projects at Dave's Homepage.
Throughout the contest, my antenna used was simply the balustrade of my flats balcony, ground was connected to heating pipes. Although I could not spend as much time as I wanted, I received and identified more stations than expected. The longwave band alone tuned in 11 stations. Most of them can only be heard in night, during the day only Deutschlandfunk at 207 kHz can be constantly heard. The slight improvements of the receiver and the more sensitive headphones also increased the number of received stations on the mediumwave bands. The winner if it comes to the most distant station was clearly BSKSA from Duba in Saudi Arabia with 2854 km.
I noticed, that some stations I received a year before are either gone, reduced transmission time and/or transmission power. Unfortunately, I yet not found a new station.
