Seems this contest is getting international..nice. Yesterday I found excellent conditions for receiving, I was able to catch almost all stations I heard the three nights before. At least there were a few new ones as well. Nevertheless my farthest distance is smaller than Corne's yet but not that bad for a crystal receiver (as I hope). The funny thing is that it is much harder to receive stations from neighboring Slovenia than from much more distant places in Europe.
The number of different languages in Europe make things a bit difficult, but using my freshly arrived digital world receiver for determing the frequencies makes life much easier.
The crystal radio tunes the broadcast band as well as the shortwave band, both are split into two subbands. To keep the receiver not too big, I was using closed ferrite cores from Epcos, P18-11-M33 for the BC band and RM5-K1 for the SW band. The coils are all done using two paralleled litz wires 80 x 0.02mm except the 1µH coils which use two paralled litz wires of silver-plated copper strands. Actually, this is the same wire as I used for the wiring, the insulation of the silver-plated litz wire is made of Teflon, which should not cause much losses as I hope.
The radio has two tuned circuits and a variable antenna coupling, I can switch between single- and double-tuned mode. Additionally, there are two attenuators in case of need. The tuning caps are both silver-plated devices which I luckily got on Ebay.
Rectification is done using two paralleled 5082-2835 for the BC band and again two paralleled BAT15-03W for the SW band. The matching transformer is 53.49 by Reinhöfer Röhrentechnik in Germany, which was basically intended for low-impedance headphone matching. Later I managed to get a pair of Baldwin Type C headphones which are much more sensitive than all of my modern types (but not that comfortable). Unfortunately, using the Baldwins the impedance matching is all but perfect.
The whole thing is mounted at a polypropylene sheet for proper insulation. The most distant station received so far was 1312 km away. Could probably be more if I had another antenna than the metal made balustrade of my balcony (sounds a bit funny, but this one performs much better than using wires in the flat or at the balcony). Unfortunately, there are thunder and lightnings any night since the contest started, otherwise I would give a try to a litz wire from my window to the roof of the garages in front of the house.
